Key Prescription Requirements for LASIK: Am I a Good Candidate?

LASIK is a popular and effective vision correction surgery that has helped millions of people reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contact lenses. However, not everyone is a suitable candidate for LASIK. One of the most important factors in determining eligibility is your eye prescription.

What Is LASIK?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a type of refractive surgery that reshapes the cornea to improve how the eye focuses light onto the retina. It’s commonly used to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.

Ideal Prescription Ranges for LASIK

To be considered a good candidate for LASIK, your prescription should fall within specific ranges:

  • Nearsightedness (Myopia): Up to -12.00 diopters

  • Farsightedness (Hyperopia): Up to +6.00 diopters

  • Astigmatism: Up to 6.00 diopters

While LASIK can treat a wide range of prescriptions, the most predictable outcomes are typically seen in patients with mild to moderate vision correction needs. Patients with very high prescriptions may still be eligible, but results can vary, and alternative procedures may be recommended.

Stability of Your Prescription

Another key factor is the stability of your prescription. Your vision should be stable for at least 12 months before undergoing LASIK. Frequent changes in your prescription can indicate that your eyes are still changing, which could affect the long-term success of the surgery.

Age and Eye Health Requirements

Most LASIK candidates are 18 years or older, with stable vision. Additionally, your eyes should be healthy, free from conditions like:

  • Severe dry eye syndrome

  • Cataracts

  • Glaucoma

  • Corneal diseases or scars

Your cornea also needs to be thick enough for the reshaping process. A comprehensive eye exam can determine if your cornea has the necessary structure for LASIK.
